This museum is rumored to be the home of a few lingering spirits. Cold spots and a phantom smell of tobacco have been reported in the old laundry room. Cell 19 is rumored to be haunted by a female prisoner who passed away inside. Photos have shown ghost orbs and the sound of coughing has come from the empty cell.

  • Phantom Blood Stain

Visited site. I am a psychic intuitive "medium" & my senses were working overtime, to say the least! FRom the gas chamber, myself & 2 others in my group felt pressure on our chests, I felt like I was, "weighted", like pressed from above, throughout areas of the building this feeling overcame me, including in the entryway to the ladies bath room. I had hard time breathing (not just from the altitude), but I felt like rushing through my veins & hair standing on end. The employee in gift shop described a couple of things that people have seen, experienced & one is the "phantom blood stain" on the floor, downstairs. He said they have scrubbed it, washed it, repeatedly and it keeps coming back. It is the location of an inmate that was murdered by another inmate. I was able to photograph that stain, in two photos. I have not reviewed the rest of the photos, but I would LOVE to participate in a lockdown w/a good paranormal investigative crew! The gift shop employee also told us about the Pioneer cemetery * & inmate burial grounds. So eerie!!!

  • Worked there - plenty of stories

I worked at the Museum of Colorado Prisons during the summers from 2006 to 2008. There were lots of creepy things that happened there (I heard my name whispered very clearly near my ear once). Edna (from cell 18) was a prominent figure in many ghost stories from the place, and there are lots of exhibits there that have been associated with life and death in the Colorado prison system. Very cool place, and very creepy. Worth a stop if you're passing through Canon City!
